who can volunteer?

  • Our minimum age is nine. Volunteers nine to thirteen must be accompanied by an adult.
  • Volunteer with a group or your family - we love it!
  • Volunteers must complete an application and undergo a background check.
  • School-appointed community service and ISP hours are gladly accepted, based on availability.
  • Court-ordered community service volunteers are not accepted at the Museum.

  • Target Tuesday Nights

    Dates: November 1, December 6, January 3, February 7 and March 7
    Shift: 4 pm - 8:30 pm

    Through Target's generous sponsorship, families can play for free the first Tuesday evening of each month from 4 - 8 pm. Volunteers interact with Museum guests and encourage play in our world-class exhibits.

  • Teaching Kitchen Assistant

    In our Teaching Kitchen cooking classes, families explore new foods and learn how to make healthy recipes together. As a Teaching Kitchen Assistant, you will engage with families, assist with class preparation and help with clean up between classes.

    Reports to: Teaching Kitchen Coordinator

    Position Responsibilities and Essential Functions

    • Be friendly, engaging, and fun while representing the Museum in a positive and professional manner
    • Follow safety and sanitation guidelines
    • Engage with families during class by helping to guide from one task to the next, asking probing questions and thanking them for coming to class
    • Gather and set necessary equipment for class, with guidance
    • Wash and dry dishes between classes to reset
    • Assist Chef as necessary
    • Interact with Museum guests while distributing food samples using The Tasting Cart

    Position Requirements:  Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities

    • Preferred to have experience with cooking, at home or in professional kitchen
    • Capable of working individually and as part of a team
    • Dedicated and dependable, reliable and responsible
    • Attention to detail and organized
    • Familiar with Museum policies, procedures, operations and staff
    • Must be at least 16 years of age

    Physical Working Conditions and Effort

    • Must be able to move/stand for 4 hours at a time
    • Ability to lift 30 - 40 lbs.
    • The noise level in the work environment is moderate to noisy

    Training

    • Attend New Volunteer Orientation
    • On the job training will be provided to include: program structure, general use of the kitchen, overview of safety and sanitation guidelines, program details

    Commitment

    • FLEXIBLE! Museum hours: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday: 9 am - 4 pm; Wednesday: 9 am - 7:30 pm; Saturday, Sunday: 10 am – 5 pm. Variable hours: 4 - 6 hours per week

  • Facility Rental Assistant

    The Facility Rental Assistant provides exceptional customer service while supporting Museum staff during event set-up/tear down and onsite coordination with clients and caterers.

    Reports to: Facility Rental Coordinator

    Qualifications:

    • Must be 18 or older to apply
    • Ability to work evenings and weekends as necessary

    Position Responsibilities and Essential Functions

    • Assist with operational efforts related to the Museum’s Facility Rental program
    • Provide support to Facility Rental Coordinator with event preparation and breakdown
    • Help to maintain a welcoming, enjoyable and safe environment
    • Ensure clients and caterers are informed of rental rules and guidelines
    • Support administrative needs as necessary

    Position Requirements: Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities

    • Enjoy working with diverse groups of people , team oriented, creative, outgoing, and flexible
    • Exceptional customer service skills

    Physical Working Conditions and Effort

    • Requires ability to lift up to 50 pounds, i.e. setup for events with tables and chairs

  • Art Studio Ambassador

    In The Art Studio, we encourage our guests to let their imagination run wild! Between painting, drawing, collaging and crafting, there is always a new creative experience to explore. Volunteers maintain easels and paints, engage with guests, answer questions and more.

    Reports to: Art Studio Coordinator

    Position Responsibilities and Essential Functions

    • Takes ownership of Art Studio to ensure a clean and safe environment
    • Supports the clay program by making phone calls to guests whose clay pieces are ready for pick up
    • Keeps detailed notes on phone calls made to guests
    • Reset paint easels by removing paintings, wiping down surfaces, and replacing with fresh paper
    • Clean paint cups, lids, and paint brushes
    • Refill paint cups with a variety of colors
    • Assist with window painting clean up using pressure sprayer and squeegees
    • Reset Invitation Table by tidying up, replacing glue stick and marker caps, and discarding scrap paper 
    • Supports Museum safety policies
    • Consults Art Studio Coordinator and Museum Associates for assistance as needed 

    Position Requirements:  Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities

    • Art Studio Ambassadors are expected to speak positively and be in good health, lively and young at heart with a desire to lead guests in a fun and friendly manner
    • Ability to articulate with clear speaking voice
    • Dedicated and dependable, reliable and responsible
    • Works well with minimal supervision and structure
    • Attend all trainings and new volunteer orientations as required
    • Familiar with Museum policies, procedures, operations and staff
    • Must be at least 16 years of age

    Physical Working Conditions and Effort

    • Must be able to move/sit/stand for 3-4 hours at a time
    • Ability to lift 40-60 lbs.

    Training

    • Attend New Volunteer Orientation
    • On the job training will be provided to include: customer service, Art Studio operations and standards

    Commitment

    • FLEXIBLE! Museum hours: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday: 9 am - 4 pm; Wednesday: 9 am - 7:30 pm; Saturday, Sunday: 10 am - 5 pm.
    • Variable hours: 3 - 4 hours per week

  • Guest Services Ambassador

    Create a sparkling first impression for our Museum guests by engaging them in the Admissions area! Guest Services Ambassadors hand out maps and answer general Museum questions, provide information on our upcoming events, offer friendly smiles and more!

    Reports to: Manager of Guest Services

    Position Responsibilities and Essential Functions

    • Ensure in and out flow of Museum guests by providing hand stamps
    • Provide information, directions and answers to questions regarding the Museum and its programs as they enter and leave Museum
    • Takes ownership of lobby area to ensure a clean and safe environment
    • Supports Museum safety policies
    • Consults Guest Services Associates for assistance as needed
    • Respond to scheduling inquiries in a timely manner

  • Gift Shop Assistant

    Do you love to shop til you drop? Then this position is for you! Help out in our Gift Shop by encouraging play, answering guest questions, selecting new inventory, restocking merchandise, assisting with inventory counts and more.

    Reports to: Manager of Guest Services

    Position Responsibilities and Essential Functions

    • Provide a fun, friendly and engaging gift shop experience for the Museums members and guests
    • Assist with selecting, ordering, receiving, pricing and merchandising gift shop products
    • Maintain a clean and organized gift shop
    • Assist with conducting inventory counts as needed
    • Welcome, assist and provide product knowledge to members and guests in gift shop
    • Respond to scheduling inquiries in a timely manner

    • Familiar with Museum policies, procedures, operations and staff

    • Comfortable working in a busy retail environment

    • Previous retail, purchasing, or merchandising experience a plus
    • Capable of working individually and as part of a team
    • Comfortable with phones and basic administrative duties

    The Membership Assistant helps process membership applications, supports database entry and other administrative tasks.

    Reports to: Office Manager

    • Data Entry

    • Self-motivated
    • Comfortable with phones and basic administrative duties
    • Familiar with Museum policies, procedures, operations and staff
    • Strong customer service, interpersonal and communication skills
    • Must be at least 15 years of age

    Physical Working Conditions and Effort

    • Must be able to move/sit/stand for 4 - 6 hours at a time
    • Must be able to type 30 wpm.

    Training

    • Attend New Volunteer Orientation
    • On the job training will be provided to include: database entry (Altru) and Museum membership processing

    Commitment

    • FLEXIBLE! 4 - 8 hours per week, Monday - Friday between 9:00 am and 4:00 pm
    • Minimum of three months

  • Evaluation and Audience Research Assistant

    The Evaluation and Audience Research Assistant provides essential support to Museum staff by assisting with data collection on the Museum floor, data entry and other crucial tasks.

    Reports to: Director of Education

    Position Responsibilities and Essential Functions

    • Data collection activities on the Museum floor (for example: asking adult guests to complete digital surveys, completing structured observations such as counting and timing guests in Museum exhibits)
    • Assist Museum staff with data collection by interacting and engaging with children while adult guests are being interviewed
    • Data entry and administrative tasks related to evaluation and research
    • Be friendly, engaging, and fun while representing the Museum in a positive and professional manner

    Position Requirements:  Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities

    • Fluent in spoken and written English
    • Bilingual Spanish a plus
    • Confident and friendly, comfortable talking with children and adults
    • Energetic and flexible; demonstrated ability to take initiative in completing tasks
    • Computer proficiency
    • Must be at least 15 years of age

    Physical Working Conditions and Effort

    • Must be able to move/sit/stand for 4 - 6 hours at a time
    • Many shifts will take place on the Museum floor, a moderate to noisy environment

    Training

    • Attend New Volunteer Orientation
    • On the job training will be provided including: how to approach guests for participation, how to collect and record data and how to manage digital survey platforms

    Commitment

    • FLEXIBLE! Shifts can be anywhere from 2 - 8 hours per week, Monday - Friday and occasional Saturdays
    • Any time between 9:00 am and 4:00 pm
    • Minimum of three months commitment required
    • Must be on time for all scheduled shifts and notify supervisor if sick or unable to attend

  • Accessibility Playologist

    The Accessibility Playologist is responsible for facilitating activities, engaging with guests and keeping exhibit spaces organized and inviting during accessibility events. Playologist volunteers gain hands-on experience helping children and families with disabilities engage in meaningful play-based learning. Volunteers have the opportunity to collaborate with education staff to enhance programming designed for access and inclusion in the Museum.

    Accessibility volunteers must be at least 18 years of age and attend a staff accessibility training. Shifts are Saturday mornings (bi-monthly) 7:30 am-10:30 am.
